“Children’s Song Writer” presents the life and literary and cultural efforts and accomplishments of Abbas Yamini Sharif. His historical role is such that his life story is in fact a review of the history of the children’s literature and education in Iran from the beginning of 20th century. In this documentary his unpleasant experiences of Maktab (traditional one class one teacher school system) and newly founded elementary school, his difficult childhood, his memories of his acquaintance with Farrokhi Yazdi (the criticizing political poet of end of Qajar and early Pahlavi times), his passion for words’ rhythms and interest in playing with poetry in childhood and the growth of his interest in children’s literature in his youth are reviewed.
His own words and words of his wife and children open up a new window to his eventful personal life and changing times of his childhood and youth. In its course, the film covers the events that led to his passion for and dedication to children’s literature in Iran. His role in forming the first magazines for children, “Bazi Koodakan” (Children’s Plays), ”Daneshamooz”(Student), “Majaleh Sazman Javana Shir O Khorsheed” (Sun & Lion Youth Organization Magazine) and “Kayhan Bacheha” (Kayhan for Children) are recognized. His trip to United States in 1953 to attend Columbia University for majoring in Early Childhood Education, his establishment of one of the first private schools (Ravesheno Schools) in Iran, in 1954, the first Children’s Club in Tehran, his cooperation with Davood Pirnia and performers at Radio, Sima Bina, Alice,Bella and Nicole Alvandi, Fazlolah Mohtadi, Sobhi, are some of the most fascinating and untold parts of the history of Iranian children’s heritage. The account of the founding of the Children’s Book Council of Iran told by its founders and impact of intellectual movements in 1960s and 1970’s, open new prospective to historical developments in Children literature in Iran.
In making of this documentary, parts of Abbas Yamini Sharif’s childhood have been enacted and interviews, memories and comments of children’s literature’s experts, friends and acquaintances of Abbas Yamini Sharif and his family’s rich archives have been used. Songs and music from his poetry create an attractive and jubilant atmosphere throughout the film.
